Located in Calgary’s historic Inglewood neighborhood, the Silk Road Spice Merchant is a great place to pick up high-quality spices and herbs, as well as some unique blends to enhance your cooking. The store has a vintage appeal, with dozens of open jars containing loose and un-ground spices that you can smell and sample. They also have a variety of cookbooks, tajine’s and other cookwares available for sale.
You purchase by herbs and spices by weight or can buy pre-filled jars, as well as variety packs of pre-selected spices. Some of my top favorites include the Argentinian chimichurri steak spice, for BBQing meats or flavoring stews. I also love the assortment of different Mexican, Indian, and North African spices, like their Berber blend for soups and tajines. Even basics like sea salt and peppercorns are available in unique and high-quality variations.
The store itself has fantastic ambiance and it’s a great place just to browse or window shop. If you’re looking for a gift idea, this would be a fantastic place to buy a variety pack of spices for someone a birthday or housewarming present. Almost all the spices they carry are gluten free, but be sure to double check.
The store is open 7 days a week in Inglewood, as well they have a weekend booth at the Calgary Farmer’s Market. They also have an Edmonton location on Whyte Ave and offer online ordering. Check our the Silk Road Spice Merchant for great ways to spice up your cooking.
