For a nice dinner out, there is nothing quite as tantalizing as Italian. Mercato is an upscale Italian restaurant, cafe, and market located in the bustling 4th Street Mission district. The pricing is on the higher side, but so is the quality of food.
Mercato is an eclectic mix of rustic Italian with upscale elements. There are hanging bunches of garlic and dried peppers, crisp white-clothed individual tables, long communal bar counters, and a very impressive gourmet espresso machine front and center in the ‘cafe’ area of the space.
The menu features authentic Italian fare such as gnocchi, risotto, seafood, and has a good selection of gluten free pasta available for intolerant diners such as myself. For me, however, the real uniqueness of Mercato is their Italian market.
The market has roasted red peppers, fresh herbs, high-end olive oil and a variety of cheeses (to name a few items). You can buy everything you need to enjoy a little piece of Italy in the comfort of your own home.
